PLC Armidale has long been known for the quality of its music program. However, I think those who attended the evening would agree that PARCHED, our combined concert with sister school PLC Sydney, raised the bar even higher.

It wasn’t just the quality of performances which were diverse, polished and entertaining, it was the evident commitment to a very worthy cause which motivated all involved to give of their best. The opening item featuring a complex original composition by our Director of Music, Matthew Minter, which inspired by the beauty of the New England Region, allowed the combined orchestra of PLC Armidale and PLC Sydney to set the scene for the evening. Items such as Isla Biffin’s solo harp performance highlighted the exceptional talent of this accomplished young musician.

Very polished and engaging Years 3-6 Choir and Senior Choir items demonstrated teamwork and the powerful effect of diverse voices singing as one. As did the Bel Canto vocal ensemble. Jennifer Sung’s violin solo as part of the Years 3-6 Choir performance added to the mood of the piece.

Our Senior Strings showcased their commitment to excellence in a complex performance which highlighted the talent of some of our more experienced musicians yet enabled all string players to demonstrate their skill and results of consistent effort.

Georgie Swales moving original composition telling a personal story of the effect of the drought added to the emotion experienced by many. As did a series of video clips produced by Mr Sam Jacometti, interspersed throughout the performances featuring voices and personalities who spoke candidly of the effects of the drought serving as a reminder of the cause we were supporting.

The contributions of PLC Sydney musicians woven amongst those of our own, inspired a number of girls present on the evening to suggest the Pipes & Drums could be a novel addition to the PLC Armidale music offering. Not to mention the rousing, upbeat performance of the PLC Sydney Big Band inspiring our fledgling Jazz ensemble to recruit some additional members.

The sneak preview of Matilda the Musical indicated the treat in store later in the year, with ticket sales this week indicating the enthusiasm of our wider community to attend.

PARCHED was not a night of a few, for a few. PARCHED was a demonstration of the power of team work and collaboration. The Music Staff of PLC Armidale willingly took on the bulk of the work necessary for the evening but were fully supported by colleagues across the school carrying out a myriad of other tasks and duties required for an event of such diversity and polish.

The collegiality and collaboration between the two schools was also a testimony to what is possible when we work towards a common goal for a worthy cause. An opportunity to serve and bring joy to others was evident throughout the evening, aptly demonstrated in the generous supper provided by our P&F as well.  Thank you to those who attended, to those who enabled performance, to those who gave generously and to all those who made PARCHED the visible demonstration of community.

There's still time to donate, please visit our PLC Armidale website here.

You can also show your support for the Drought Relief Appeal by participating in the Silent Auction which closes soon. Bid on a wonderful weekend away at the Hunter Valley or dinner for 4 at Parliament House.

Please visit our Community image gallery to view many more photos from the night.

Managing our water usage

Our Stage 4 Integrated Learning students had a visit from the Armidale Regional Council Sustainability Officer, Sally Thorsteinsson. Sally highlighted to the girls the context of the current water situation and the importance of taking action as individuals and a School to manage our water usage. She also offered some useful information and answered student questions to assist with developing sustainable solutions as part of the School Improvement Project that they have been working on this Term. A special thank you to Sally for her informative presentation and inspiring the girls to create and implement positive change at PLC Armidale.

MRS LORNA AHERN
HEAD OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

LR Thumbnail image template SS Setting goals for Semester 2 – The Five Golden Rules

Almost a month ago, you got your Semester 1 report. I can guarantee that whilst you were ecstatic over some of the comments and feedback, there will be other aspects you were not so happy about – or maybe it was your parents or guardians that were not as pleased as they could be.

So you said you’d “set some goals” for Semester 2, but what does that really mean? Goal setting is much more than simply saying you want something to happen. Unless you clearly define exactly what you want and understand why you want it the first place, your odds of success are considerably reduced. By following the Five Golden Rules of Goal Setting you can set goals with confidence and enjoy the satisfaction that comes along with knowing you achieved what you set out to do.

The Five Golden Rules:

1. Set Goals that Motivate You
2. Set SMART Goals There are many variations of what SMART stands for, but the essence is this – goals should be:

  • Specific - your goal must be clear and well defined
  • Measurable - include precise amounts, dates, and so on in your goals so you can measure your degree of success
  • Attainable - if you set a goal that you have no hope of achieving, you will only demoralize yourself and erode your confidence
  • Relevant - goals should be relevant to the direction you want your life and career to take
  • Time Bound - your goals must have a deadline

3. Set Goals in Writing
4. Make an Action Plan
5. Stick With It!

All the plans in the world look beautiful, but if you don’t stick with it, it’s just a pretty picture! Make yourself accountable to someone who you trust and will allow to check in with you, and who is allowed to give you feedback if you’re not following through.

Junior School News

MRS FIONA WAKE
HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL

PLC_Day1_048

The students in the Junior School have started their term with new discoveries relating to their Term 3 Inquiry Based Units of work.

Kindy and Year 1 are learning about water as they study the unit ‘Water Works’, Year 2 are exploring a unit called ‘Push and Pull’ where they learn about forces on land and water, toys and motion & sinking and floating, Stage 2 (Year 3 and 4) are exploring Pollination and Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) are learning about the world of Bees.

There is so much happening across the College over the coming weeks. The Newcastle Permanent Maths Competition is upon us once again and ICAS Competitions in Writing, Spelling, Digital Technologies, Maths and Science are approaching soon also.

Our visitors from China from the Wuhan Australian International School are enjoying our wide-open spaces and interactions with our students in the playground and when participating in selective afternoon classes. Our warmth, smiling faces and willingness to connect with students who speak a different language is remarkable. Non- verbal communication, friendly gesturing and modelling kindness and inclusiveness is a beautiful sight to see.

As the African proverb states, ‘It takes a village to raise a child’, which means that an entire community of people must interact with children for those children to experience and grow in a safe and healthy environment. I feel our Junior School is a wonderful environment for our students, we continue to grow and respond to change in positive and encouraging ways. Your voice is always appreciated. I encourage you to share any concerns or positive experiences with us in an honest, open and respectful way.

I would like to warmly welcome the following new students to our Junior School; Yolanda Hao (Year 4), Polly Turnbull (Year 5), Charlotte White (Year 4) and Yuhe Liu (2 weeks – Year 5).

    Classroom Feature - Pre-K

Pre-Kindergarten is inquiring about sustainability this term. They have been looking at different habitats and how we depend on nature and its resources. Our current water restrictions have been a big focus. Pre-K’s observations around the Junior School highlight there is not much growing in our global garden at the moment, other than the garlic they planted, which does not need a lot of water. They have noticed that lots of grass and potted plants have died. What sort of ideas do you have for saving water? Let us know of your ideas and practices!

What we are currently exploring, along with the action we are going to take will be showcased at the Parched Fundraising Concert and in Term 4, as part of the Open Day ‘Down the Garden Path’.

      Prek2 Prek3

Pre-K has come up with ideas on how they can reduce and reuse water. They have been collecting used water in containers and placing buckets outside.

    EQUESTRIAN TEAM REPORT ISHE

    MRS AMANDA KENNETT
    EQUESTRIAN TEAM MANAGER

Second term was a busy one for PLC’s Equestrian team. Six girls and their families committed to the Coona Expo camp out with truly amazing results below and then Chelsea Mullen and Charlotte Lamaro backed up with not only the HVGS Equestrian Champs but also joined, Tilly, Jazz, Sophia and Abby at ISHE in Tamworth for four days of competition.

Tilly on her new boy “My Jackson” rode confidently in gymkhana with three 5ths (including pairs with Sophia), two clear rounds in the 65cm show jumping, 66.61% & 58.57% in her preliminary dressage tests, her first ever ODE as well as Working Horse Challenge. Charlie and Chelsea both competed in Combined Training, where Charlie bettered her dressage percentage from Coona to 64.69% and Chelsea ended up in 9th place after Show jumping. Chelsea and Charlie also had a go at the Cutting which looked like a lot of fun. Unfortunately Chelsea and Jazz were eliminated in both rounds of 80cm show jumping, however, Jazz won her EVA60 ODE out of 30 open riders and also placed in bend and flag in sporting as well as pairs and bareback in gymkhana. Jazz and her horse “Louie” also rode their first Novice dressage tests which were in an open class. Sophia competed for PLC for the first time and had fun in  sporting and placed in pairs with Tilly on the gorgeous “Peter Pan”. Abby competed in the camp draft with a camp score of 20, dealing with difficult cattle (although blessed to have any cattle at all given the drought) only half a dozen riders managed an out of camp score.

All the girls should be very pleased with themselves and their horses last term, they have all achieved goals be they personal bests, ribbons, stepping up to higher grades, competing for the first time, competing on new horses and importantly “having a go”. Well done to you all.

PLC Armidale sponsors two Rookie awards in the One Day event at ISHE and the lucky recipients for 2019 were : Senior Georgia Tutt from Ravenswood School for Girls and Junior Sam Kelly from Moree Public School.

    Pathways News

    MR CHRIS SPENCER
    PATHWAYS DIRECTOR

    PLC_Day2_135

Our Pathways girls are gradually establishing their routine. It is a great encouragement to see them participating in different co-curricular activities, such as basketball, choir or backstage crew for Matilda, with limited English but the courage and willingness to try. Thank you to all the staff and girls for helping and guiding them to settle in to the activities!

On the other hand, our Wuhan students are now halfway into their stay here in Armidale and are thoroughly enjoying the experiences of being at PLC Armidale.

Their routine looks something like this: Weekday mornings are spent doing intensive English classes with experienced teachers who come in especially to teach the boys and girls in groups of about 10. They have developed a special program to make the most of the facilities and environment we enjoy here.

The afternoons are spent mixing the learning up with some sport, drama or science. Having the opportunity to do this in a hands-on way with our staff is a terrific experience, and the staff are enjoying the enthusiasm of our young visitors as well!

On top of this, the afternoons and weekends are spent in local recreational activities such as fossicking at Inverell and pottery lessons. Of course, in doing all these things, the children are practising the English they study in class in a real-world environment.

Last weekend saw the group head off to Scott’s Head for a few days at the beach. The opportunity to explore a coastal environment and enjoy the peace and quiet of the seaside provided a strong contrast of experience to the energy and busyness of Wuhan, a city of more than 10 million!
